The Hawai'i Public Housing Authority Breaks Ground on New Affordable Housing Community For Seniors

The Hawaiʻi Public Housing Authority (HPHA) has announced the groundbreaking ceremony for a new affordable housing complex for senior citizens on School Street.

The Hawaiʻi Public Housing Authority (HPHA) has announcedthe groundbreaking ceremony for a new affordable housing complex for seniorcitizens on School Street. This marks a significant moment as HPHA joins handswith Governor Josh Green M.D., Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, representativesfrom the State Senate, the State House, the Honolulu City Council, the HPHABoard, developer partner Highridge Costa, and HPHA’s partners to commence theconstruction of the first 250-unit affordable housing tower.

 

The groundbreaking ceremony takes place ahead of thelegislative session, during which housing remains a top priority for GovernorJosh Green. In a statement, Governor Green says, “With this groundbreaking, weare building a stronger, more compassionate community for our seniors. Thesehomes will foster a sense of fellowship, empowerment, and safety for ourkūpuna. By investing in housing for our senior community, we recognize theimmense value they bring to our culture here in Hawai‘i.”

 

Executive Director Hakim Ouansafi of HPHA expresses hisexcitement about the new development. He states, “Once completed, this sacredland will provide an additional 800 units for senior citizens, ensuringaffordable housing for a lifetime.” The chosen site has served as a gatheringplace for vulnerable individuals seeking available housing units. However, itwill now be transformed into a vibrant and thriving community.

 

Ouansafi expresses gratitude to development partnersHighridge Costa Development Company, Form Partners, and Hawaiian Dredging, aswell as the HPHA team for their dedication and commitment to the project. Healso thanks the Hawaii State Legislature, the City and County of Honolulu, theHawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation, consultants at EJPConsulting and Reno & Cavanaugh, and all those involved in bringingaffordable housing to fruition.
